Your Private John O’Groats Day Trip Itinerary

Your day begins with a scenic drive along the Moray Firth and into the far reaches of Sutherland, where the road hugs the coast, passing through small fishing villages such as Helmsdale and Brora.

Journey North – Villages of the Coast

As the jaw-dropping scenery unfolds before you, your driver-guide will share stories of crofters, clans, and clearances, while the landscape shifts from rolling farmland to windswept sea cliffs.

A short pause in one of these towns offers the chance to stretch your legs, admire harbor views, and get a taste of rural life in the Highlands.

We visited the Scottish Highlands with a group of eight people, and Braw made it a truly unique experience. Traveling in a luxury bus from Inverness to Loch Ness, Isle of Skye, Oban, Pitlochry, and back to Inverness, we were guided by Graham, our fantastic driver-guide. He knew all the most beautiful spots along the way, and his knowledge of Scottish history was remarkable. Add in a dose of Scottish humor, and the trip was nothing short of perfect. Even the weather was on our side—only one hour of rain, and that in the middle of April! For anyone considering a Scottish adventure, I highly recommend Braw Tours. Traveling through Scotland without a worry—pure bliss! Sounds like an unforgettable journey through breathtaking landscapes and rich history.

Dunrobin Castle

Dunrobin Castle, Scotland

Rising suddenly above the coast, Dunrobin Castle appears like something from a storybook, with French-style turrets and manicured gardens tumbling down towards the sea.

Seat of Clan Sutherland for centuries, its richly decorated interiors tell of aristocratic Highland life, while its walled gardens offer a peaceful stroll. If timing allows, you may even witness a falconry display on the lawns.

Wick, Harbor Heritage & Highland Lunch

Continue north to Wick, once one of Europe’s busiest herring ports.

Today, it retains its maritime character with a working harbor, stone warehouses, and hints of its Viking past.

Your guide can lead you on a short wander through the town before settling in for a relaxed Highland lunch at a local inn or restaurant.

We took a glorious five-day tour in May with Braw Tours from Edinburgh to Oban, to Isle of Skye, to Inverness and back. We were a group of three generations with different interests. Firstly, as being the person in the family who plans all the trips I was very happy to have Deborah at Braw Tours put together the itinerary based on my input and coordinate the details. She was always very helpful and prompt to respond. Secondly, our guide Dougie took excellent care of us during our trip and he became part of our family. We loved his enthusiasm and how invested he was in making sure we all had a great time. Dougie was very flexible and accommodated our needs and schedule, like an emergency trip to the market for knappies, finding us pizza take-out for dinner on the Isle of Skye when all restaurants were overflowing, rearranging our tour activities for an unplanned business meeting, and buying carrots and finding a hungry Shetland cow for our 3-year-old granddaughter to feed. Everyone was very happy with the trip. I was especially pleased because all of the planning was taken out of my hands and I could relax and enjoy it too. It was also very valuable to have Dougie do all the driving for us so we did not have the stress of following directions and driving on narrow Scottish roads. This way everyone could sit back, relax, and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

John O’Groats, Edge of the Map

John O’Groats, Scotland

By afternoon, you reach John O’Groats, a place that has captured imaginations for centuries as the northernmost point of mainland Britain.

At the iconic signpost, pose for photographs with windswept seas behind you and the Orkney Islands on the horizon. There is a feeling of arrival here, of standing at the edge of the known world, where land yields to ocean.

Duncansby Head – Sea Stacks & Clifftops

Duncansby Head, Scotland

Just beyond John O’Groats lies Duncansby Head, one of the most dramatic stretches of coastline in Scotland.

Here towering cliffs plunge into the sea, and the remarkable Duncansby Stacks rise like cathedral spires from the waves. Seabirds wheel above, and the wind carries the scent of salt and heather. Your guide will help you take in the view safely and comfortably, with plenty of time for photographs.

I have spent a magical week in beautiful Scotland, of course, thanks to its unparalleled beauty and its kind, friendly and genuine people. My trip could have been a good one even if I just roamed around aimlessly to be honest. But, booking with Braw Scottish Tours has definitely been a game changer for the whole trip. I have to say that I’ve been so well taken care of from the moment I received a reply from Jack to my enquiry email, to the detailed planning of my week and the flexibility to change things around to choosing my guide. When John picked me up and we started our tour with the epic Stirling castle, I knew I made the right choice. John will tell you things that you don’t see in a documentary or read in a book. He will tell you stories and make you feel you are living in them. He’s such a wonderful story teller and a humorous, friendly and courteous guide. He is generous with his time, knowledge and is flexible with plans. I have laughed so much, met many local scottish people who showed me what a wonderful nation this is, learned quite a few scottish words, dined with Scots, raced sheep and chased highland cows and went up above the clouds in our highland expedition. From Glasgow to Stirling to Edinburgh to Inverness and the Queens View followed by Isle of Skye and the wonderful walk to the Niest lighthouse and then fort william, I have lived a wonderful dream for 7 days that was only made possible because of Braw Tours. Thank you John. You’re booked in August and this time I’m bringing the whole clan with me! Don’t think twice and book with Braw Scottish Tours if you’re planning to come to this beautiful country. It will be worth your while and your money. Thanks again and looking forward to coming back very soon ❤️

Return to Inverness

As the day draws to a close, your driver takes the scenic road back through Sutherland. By the time you return to Inverness, you will have traveled through some of Scotland’s most remote and evocative landscapes, and stood proudly at the very edge of the land.
