Robert Burns Birthplace

Traditional whitewashed thatched cottage in Alloway, Scotland, a popular historic site featured on Braw Scottish Tours
Alloway, Scotland

The first stop is the humble cottage where Robert Burns was born in 1759. With its whitewashed walls and thatched roof, it tells of the poet’s modest beginnings.

Nearby, the award-winning Robert Burns Birthplace Museum houses manuscripts, artefacts, and exhibits that bring to life the wit, romance, and passion of Scotland’s bard. On a private tour, linger over rare letters and editions of his poems, guided by your expert’s storytelling.

We were in Scotland for 21 days which included a Vacations by Rail tour, 4 days in Edinburgh and Glasgow with Braw, then 9 days at Aigas Field Center at Beauly. We have seen amazing glens, mountains, castles, lochs, cathedrals, historical sites, the Jacobite train, and a good deal of the Highlands and Islands. The entire 21 days were perfect, we could not have asked for a better experience. The most memorable part of our trip has to be our 4 days with Braw Tours thanks to our guide, Callum Couston. Able to turn in a moment's notice to meet our needs, Callum was personable, knowledgeable, funny, accommodating, a master storyteller, and an amazing driver. I think it speaks highly of their capabilities that in the trip of a lifetime, that they were the pinnacle of the experience. We will be highly recommending Braw to our friends, and if you are lucky enough to get Callum, you will be pleased. Neither of the other tours offered any time in Edinburgh and Glasgow other than to arrive and leave, and I contacted several other agencies before I found Braw on Trip Advisor to fill that gap. About a month before the start of our trip, my knee went wonky and I was having difficulty walking. There was no way I could make it up the steps to Edinburgh Castle, so Callum immediately took us to the Botanical Gardens, which we absolutely loved.

Alloway Auld Kirk & Brig o’ Doon

Picturesque view of the Brig o’ Doon stone bridge over the River Doon surrounded by lush greenery and gardens in Alloway, Scotland
Alloway, Scotland

Step into the very heart of Tam o’ Shanter. At the ruined Alloway Auld Kirk, imagine witches dancing in the flickering moonlight as Burns described.

From here, stroll to the Brig o’ Doon, the medieval bridge where Tam’s horse Meg famously lost her tail escaping the pursuing hags. Your guide’s recitation of Burns’ lines against this backdrop will bring the scene to life.

Culzean Castle & Country Park

Culzean Castle perched on a cliff overlooking the sea in Ayrshire, Scotland, surrounded by lush greenery and blue sky, a popular Scottish tourist attraction and historic site
Culzean Castle, Scotland

Continue to the coast, where Culzean Castle rises dramatically on a clifftop above the Firth of Clyde.

Once the seat of the Kennedy clan, its grand rooms are filled with fine art, armor, and history,  including the Eisenhower Apartment, gifted to the American president after WWII.

On a private tour, enjoy a deeper exploration of the castle’s hidden stories. Outside, wander the sweeping country park: woodlands alive with birdsong, gardens rich with blooms, a swan pond, and clifftop paths with breathtaking views across to the Isle of Arran.

For a Barrie Time – Choose Braw! You MUST allow Braw Tours to show you “ the real Scotland.” We developed an itinerary with Martine, who also was our driver and guide. A native of Glasgow, Martine introduced us to castles and lochs, but also took us up Ben Nevis-the highest point in the UK; showed us where to hike in the Highlands; and introduced us to a wide range of sites and places not experienced on large bus tours. It’s worth your money & time to let Braw show you Scotland!

Lunch by the Sea

Pause for lunch at a local inn or seafood restaurant in nearby Ayr or Troon, or choose to dine within Culzean’s estate café, where hearty Highland fare is served with coastal views.

Dumfries House

Historic Dumfries House in Ayrshire Scotland with landscaped gardens and fountain under dramatic sky
Dumfries House, Scotland

For those wishing to extend the day, a private guided visit to Dumfries House can be arranged.

This Palladian masterpiece, saved and restored by King Charles III, holds one of the world’s finest collections of Chippendale furniture and offers magnificent landscaped grounds.

For the past two weeks, we have been on a cruise through the British Isles. It was the best cruise we have ever taken because our travel agent arranged for private tours for us at 5 different ports through Braw Scottish Tours. It was the best experience we ever had; the guides were extremely knowledgeable and just fun to be with. They couldn’t do enough for us and were so reliable. If you’re going to the British Isles to get private tours through Braw, you won’t be sorry. We visited Guernsey, Dublin, Glasgow, Invergordon, and Edinburgh and came home with great pictures and fond memories.

Your driver-guide returns you to Glasgow along scenic country roads, the verses of Burns and the majesty of Culzean lingering in your memory.
